100m, hurdles back at Western Relays
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The women’s 100m Open and sprint hurdles for high school athletes will be re-introduced at the 35th staging of the Milo Western Relays to be held at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex on February 9.
In a release yesterday, meet director Ray Harvey said that “in an effort to assist athletes make qualifying standards for the ISSA/GraceKennedy National High Schools Athletics Championships (Champs) in a shortened season due to the rescheduling of Champs, they would stage the events.
Previously, the women’s 100m was a part of the schedule, but was withdrawn due to a lack of entries, while the sprint hurdles was run as an Open event.
The 100m will still be run as an Open event while the hurdles will be contested in classes. The boys will contest Classes 1, 2 and 3, while the girls will run in Classes 1 and 2.
Harvey said, however, the sprint hurdles would start at 12:00 noon, an hour before the scheduled start of the meet,.
“We looked carefully at the schedule and given that the last event was set to be run after 9:00 pm, we took the decision to run the hurdles early so as not to extend the meet too late.”
The meet will be officially launched on January 31 at Gloucestershire Hotel, starting at 10:00 am. Deadline for entries will be Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
