UWI Pelicans surprise Jamalco in JNBS/JNA Sunshine Netball
THE University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans ‘A’ surprised defending champions Jamalco with an upset 24-21 win as the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS)/Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Sunshine Open League continued at the Leila Robinson Courts on Saturday.
It was a good win for the Conrad Parkes-coached Pelicans ‘A’ over the Clarendon-based aggregation, who were suffering their first defeat from four games. The result means that teams in the ‘Elite’ group have either lost one or two games.
After a keen duel, Pelicans managed to gain a 13-11 lead at half-time. The defending champions made a great attempt to gain on Pelicans as they applied more pressure in their attacks through Naudia Brown, McCalla, and Camille Brown, but the winners managed to hold out to come out with an upset victory.
Jamalco, in their second game, had to work hard to get the better of one of their arch-rivals Tivoli ‘A’ before coming out with a 28-23 win. Jamalco led 14-11 at half-time.
Tivoli ‘A’, coached by Sylvester ‘Chris’ Campbell, had earlier got the better of Mico ‘A’ 20-17 in a tough encounter. Tivoli ‘A’ led 10-7 at the interval.
