Muschett hunt ISSA/KFC Conference double
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Muschett High of Wakefield, Trelawny, will start their quest for double honours in the ISSA/KFC Western Conference High schoolboy basketball competition this afternoon when they take on Herbert Morrison Technical and Holland High, respectively, in the first game of the best-of-three finals of the Under-16 and Under-19 sections at Montego Bay Cricket Club.
Muschett are unbeaten this season and dispatched St James High and last season’s champions, Cornwall College, in their semi-finals last week and will hope their hot streak will continue.
Game two will be played on Wednesday and, if necessary, game three will be played Friday at the Cricket Club venue.
The consolation third place play-offs will be tomorrow when St James and Spot Valley meet in the Under-16 and Cornwall and William Knibb clash in the Under-19 game.
On form Muschett must start favorites to lift the titles after good wins over the opponents earlier in the season. They beat Herbert Morrison, the defending champions, 66-36, and got by Holland, 63-42.
Holland, however, who have scored back-to-back impressive wins over Cornwall in a rescheduled first-round game, and over William Knibb in the semi-finals, will, however, fancy their chances of at least forcing all three games in the Under-19 after Muschett showed signs they are beatable.
In the semi-finals, Cornwall pushed Muschett to the brink and led as late as in the final two minutes before the Trelawny school prevailed.
Muschett, however, look unstoppable in the Under-16 section with a team that could challenge for the national title later in the season.
Karlington Barrett, who is back after a broken arm sidelined him earlier in the season, along with lemon Thompson and Obrien Clarke, will lead the Muschett attack.
Meanwhile, Montego Bay Boys Club Warriors continued on their giant-killing path after beating Trelawny Tornadoes, 63-51, on Saturday at the Montego Bay Cricket Club to advance to the finals of the Hi-Lyte/Insports Western Basketball Association’s Men’s Championships.
After eliminating the second-ranked William Knibb Thunder a week earlier, Boys Club, who were seventh after the regular season with four wins and six losses, found form at the right time to beat the third-ranked Tornadoes and advance to the finals for the first time.
Warriors started slowly, trailing Tornadoes, 7-11, after the first quarter, but led by Sheldon Lyle, who had another outstanding 39 points, they came back to lead 24-19 at half-time.
They extended the lead to 45-33 going into the fourth quarter where the teams both scored 18 points. Lyle also had nine rebounds and two assists. Fabian Gifford scored eight points and Andrew Parkinson six and 20 rebounds.
