IN their first season back in the island’s top-tier football competition, Cavalier FC strolled into the Red Stripe Premier League’s second End-of-Round Final after a goalless draw against Highgate United at Drax Hall yesterday.

Following a modest first round, the KSAFA outfit has been in outstanding form in the second, notching an impressive six wins and three draws in 11 matches.

This latest result takes Cavalier to a table-topping 21 points in the second round, ahead of Arnett Gardens who were on 18 points ahead of their showdown with Harbour View in last night’s late game at the Compound.

Arnett would join Cavalier in the incentive final and become joint-round leaders with a victory over the ‘Stars of the East’.

Meanwhile, Savannah Sports Club ended Montego Bay United’s (MBU) hopes of a return to the round final, while snapping an 18-game streak since they last won a game with a 1-0 win at Frome Sports Complex. Adrian Robinson, who helped MBU win last year’s corresponding final, scored the winner for Savannah from the spot in time added in the first half.

The victory — the first for the Westmoreland side since beating fellow promoted team Cavalier, 2-1, back in September — represents a surge for the Everton Tomlinson-coached outfit, as added to their rallying 2-2 draw against Boys’ Town last week, four of their 15 points have come in the last two rounds.

It was a bitter result for MBU who, despite suffering their first defeat at Arnett Gardens last week, were in the hunt for a place in the round decider and would have been their second straight trip to the play-off after a solid round

However, MBU have only themselves to blame as they missed no fewer than seven chances with the same team that beat Wadadah, 3-1, in a St James KO match at Jarrett Park last Wednesday.

Tempers flared throughout the game and referee Kevin Thomas had a busy afternoon handing out 12 yellow cards — six to each team.

Savannah, who avenged a first-round 4-0 drubbing against MBU, got the winner after Ladale Richie fouled Triston Sommerville in the box and Robinson beat goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett from the spot.

In an effort to salvage a result, MBU coach Dr Dean Weatherly brought on attacking players Omar Gordon, Brian Brown and Kemiro James in the second half, but failed to make a dent.

MBU’s concentration on attack in the second period opened their defence, giving Savannah several chances to add to their lead.
