Time is right for Cataleya in Eight Thirty Sprint
A number of promising maiden fillies, freshly graduated to native-bred three-year-olds, will contest the $715,000 Eight Thirty Sprint in another attempt to get their careers off to a winning start going 1,000 metres straight at Caymanas Park today.
The Eight Thirty Sprint highlights the 10-race card and the field of eight is scheduled to go to post at approximately 4:45 pm with first post at 12:25 pm.
The presence of Cataleya in this easier spot along with Twinkling Rose, Rhea’s A Superstar — the early 2-1 favourite, Warrior Princess, Traditional Girl and trainer Gary Subratie pair of first-time runner Western Rose and Minnie Sunshine, should make the run quite close.
Cataleya is the most senior competitor among the runners having competed six times as two-year-old and once as a three-year-old. Owned by Tweet, she ran her last race as a two-year-old going 1,000 metres straight and ran exceedingly well to finish fourth in a smart 58.3 seconds, with the winner, first-time runner Crucial Appeal clocking an enterprising 56.3 seconds.
A bay filly, Cataleya is by Coded Warning out of the Law Of The Sea mare Metzuda, who thoroughly enjoyed running straight at you. Bred by Morris Powell, who is also the trainer, Cataleya’s run going 1,000 metres gave clear indications that she has acquired some of her dam’s traits.
And getting warm for today’s trophy shot, Cataleya, in her first run as a three-year-old, delivered another strong performance behind another first-time runner and winner Argentina at 1,100 metres, to be a mere three-quarters of a length away at the end.
The leading apprentice Shameree Muir, who was aboard the Law Of The Sea filly in her last run, will again pilot her.
Twinkling Rose, who like Cataleya has already performed with telling effect over the course by finishing second going 1,000 metres straight on debut and having been stepped up in training since last raced should be expected to perform with great tenacity over the course in her second attempt. She should offer just as much challenge to a Cataleya’s victory, as Rhea’s A Superstar is conditioned to do with the tongue tie introduced for the first time.
Twinkling Rose, a chestnut filly by Traditional out of Giveittomebaby (Alawad) bred and owned by Elite Bloodstock Limited, will be running for the first time as a three-year-old, but will be running against basically the same opponents and with the capable claiming apprentice Jemar Jackson up, it will be close going.
Based on her exercise reports and the choice of rider — champion and leading jockey Dane Nelson — it may just be a mere formality for Rhea’s A Superstar after the starter sends them on their merry chase.
What is certain is that much is expected from this filly and there is good reason for this. Well prepared for her two previous outings going the round course, Rhea’s A Superstar, by Tracking out of Cerentola (Labeeb (GB) bred and owned by Andrew Azar, showed that she has ability to win races, but trainer Ryan Darby might just have been waiting on a distance such as this for her to show her true potential and fulfill expectation with a victory.
