MONTEGO BAY, St James — MUSCHETT High School stayed on course for their second double championships in the ISSA/KFC Western Conference High schoolboys’ basketball competition after advancing to the best-of-three finals in both sections on Tuesday.

In the semi-finals played at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, the Wakefield, Trelawny school who are unbeaten in both sections all season, beat St James High 102-29 in the Under-16 before dethroning back to back Under-19 champions Cornwall College in a close game 58-52.

Muschett’s opponents in the finals will be decided this afternoon in the other semi-final, also to be played at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, starting at 4:00 pm.

Defending Under-16 champions Herbert Morrison Technical will face Spot Valley High, while William Knibb Memorial and Holland High will meet in the Under-19 game.

The top two teams from each section will qualify for the all-island play-offs.

Today, Herbert Morrison and William Knibb will start favourites after regular season wins over the opponents. Herbert Morrison had beaten Spot Valley 36-28 last year, while William Knibb prevailed over Holland 52-42.

On Tuesday, Cornwall College lost back-to-back games in the Under-19 section for the first time in years after putting up a gutsy performance against Muschett, having lost by two points 44-42 to Holland in a rescheduled regular season game last week.

The disqualification of two players who fouled out in the last five minutes including top scorer David Brown was a big loss for Cornwall who held the lead as late as less than two minutes to go.

Muschett, who had won their previous game against Cornwall 62-58 in Wakefield, were led by Trevor Mowatt’s 21 points, led by three points after the first quarter but Cornwall College rallied in the second quarter to tie the scores at 28-28.

Muschett again surged to the front after the third quarter by five points 42-37 and held on in the close and exciting fourth quarter for their final margin of victory.

Mowatt also got eight rebounds and two steals while Michael Schloss scored 18 points and had five rebounds and five steals.

Brown scored 13 points and had 16 rebounds before fouling out, while Tevin Brown scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds.

It was a different story in the Under-16 game however, as Muschett completely overwhelmed St James High, which failed to score in double figures in any of the four quarters.

Three players led by Lamon Thompson had double-doubles for Muschett; Thompson scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds along with eight assists and four steals; Obrian Clarke scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds, while Karlington Barrett, who was recovering from a broken arm, scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds.

Reynaldo Irving’s 13 points and six steals was the highlight for St James.
