Jamalco score narrow wins in JNBS/JNA Sunshine Open Netball
DEFENDING champions Jamalco registered two wins in the ‘Elite’ Group, as the 2012/2013 Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS)/Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Sunshine Open League netball for clubs continued at the Leila Robinson Courts last Saturday and Sunday.
Jamalco, in their first match on Saturday, defeated GC Foster Strikers 23-18 and then later in the evening the Clarendon-based, Winston Nevers-coached aggregation beat Mico ‘A’ 24-14.
Coach Nevers said: “Quite frankly I am very pleased on how the girls are playing. Despite not scoring heavily on our opponents, I am working on a strategy not to overburden the players.”
Meanwhile, the feature ‘Elite’ Group match between Waulgrovians ‘A’ and Tivoli ‘A’ was postponed and will be played at a later date. The Marvette Anderson-coached Waulgrovians ‘A’, however, won the other scheduled encounter by convincingly beating Cable Pro (formerly Windalco) 25-13.
According to information gathered by the Jamaica Observer, it was Tivoli’s coach, Sylvester Campbell, who asked the JNA’s League co-ordinator, Pat Thomas, for the postponement, as his players had other commitments and were not available to play the match.
In other ‘Elite’ Group games played on Saturday, University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans ‘A’ recorded two wins, 20-8 and 16-11 over Cable Pro and GC Foster Strikers ‘A’, respectively, and Mico ‘A’ defeated Global United ‘A’ 28-13.
After three games in the ‘Elite’ Group, defending champions Jamalco lead the points standing with nine points, UWI Pelicans ‘A’ with six points, Waulgrovians ‘A’ and Tivoli ‘A’ jointly with three points from one match apiece, GC Foster Strikers ‘A’ with three points from three starts, Global United ‘A’ without a point from two games, and Cable Pro without a point from three starts.
