Rae Town, August Town off mark in Super League
EARLY-SEASON favourites Rae Town and August Town got their KSAFA/Jamaica National (JN)/Super League campaigns off to winnings starts against Police National and Allman/Woodford, respectively, yesterday.
Rae Town, with a brace from Horace Sharpe, eased past Police National, 2-0, while Kevin ‘Pele’ Wilson netted the winner as August Town came from behind to clip newcomers Allman/Woodford, 2-1, at Alpha School.
In other games, UWI beat Olympic Gardens, 2-1, while the game between Santos and Mountain View at Excelsior High was pushed back to today.
Rockfort were scheduled to play Greenwich Town and Shortwood faced Barbican in late games at Constant Spring yesterday.
At Breezy Castle, the hosts took the lead after 21 minutes through former Arnett Gardens, Tivoli Gardens and Cavalier midfielder Sharpe.
They should have extended their lead just before the break, but Stephen Squire could not keep down his volley from six yards, with only goalkeeper Robert Levy to beat.
However, they did add to their lead on the hour mark when Sharpe timed his run into the box and calmly stabbed home a low cross from 12 yards.
The lanky play-maker had a great chance to complete his hat-trick minutes later, but with Levy at his mercy, he rifled his shot over the crossbar from inside the area.
Police had a few good chances to pull a goal back or even draw the game towards the end, but were wasteful in front of goal and all their chances went abegging, with Alwin Morgan being the main culprit as he missed two simple opportuntities.
Rae Town’s coach Karume Huie said it was a good start and they would be looking to build on this win.
“The aim is to take it one game at a time and the objective is to win the league… so we need to build on this; it’s just one game and we have 21 more to play,” he said.
Police coach Calvin Lewis said he was pleased with his team’s effort, but noted that their conditioning needs to improve.
At Alpha School, Allman/Woodford took the lead through Gary Lewis, but Mitch Wright equalised for the visiting August Town late in the match.
However, former national striker and Arnett Gardens marksman Wilson popped up to score the winner for the Christopher Bender-coached team.
At UWI Bowl, Kemar Cummings scored a brace to help UWI, who also came from a goal down, to beat Olympic Gardens, 2-1.
