Alysia Moulton White: A success story
IN just over two years with Sagicor, Alysia Moulton White has demonstrated that she is an asset to the insurance giant and has been rewarded for it.
The 32-year-old former CVM Television producer/presenter has seen her long-time love affair with marketing bear fruit, thanks to her promotion to manager of sponsorship and public relations earlier this month.
The married mother of one child was previously the assistant manager of sponsorships and events. In that capacity, she was responsible for, among other things, seeing to the successful staging of corporate events, including the annual corporate awards, ‘Blast Off’ (a seminar for workers and agents) and investor briefings, as well as client events.
“I [also] assisted in the co-ordination of all special projects and events, including the Sigma Corporate Run and Sagicor’s motivational seminar,” she said.
“I was, [too], responsible for the production of the Sagicor Life Jamaica Annual Report and financial statements [as well as] for the public relations activities of Sagicor Life Jamaica, including social media. I also handled all major sponsorships that the Sagicor Jamaica Group undertook,” Moulton White noted.
Her duties have now expanded.
“I will be responsible to provide key strategic and technical support to the assistant vice-president of group marketing in executing the team’s sponsorship and public relations mandate. This will involve, in addition to my previous duties, ensuring greater levels of coherence and public awareness of the products and services offered by the Sagicor Jamaica Group, particularly those of our recently rebranded subsidiary companies — Sagicor Bank and Sagicor Investments,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
Moulton White is thrilled.
“I am elated. I recognise that a great deal of responsibility has been entrusted to me and I intend to do my very best in my new role,” she said.
This comes as nothing new to Moulton White, who revealed that she has consistently tried to improve on her performance since starting work with Sagicor, though her gaze was never levelled at a promotion.
Her boss Ingrid Card, the assistant vice-president for group marketing, had high praise for her.
“She was appointed based on her consistently high performance, strong leadership qualities and her ability to work well in a team environment,” said Card.
Moulton White, meanwhile, lists among the strengths she brings to the new position: her abilities as a communicator; the fact that she is a ‘people person’ and her refusal to shy away from hard work.
“I know it’s not easily attained, but I do strive for perfection,” Moulton White noted.
“Creativity is another strong suit of mine, which is so very necessary in this position. I [also] believe I have a knack for leadership and motivating others to succeed,” she told Career & Education.
Going forward, she said her areas of priority will include making the public “keenly aware of the work of both Sagicor Bank and Sagicor Investments”.
“The first quarter of the year is usually extremely busy for us and right now my team and I are busy making preparations for the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run,” said the professional, who will now supervise between three and four other workers.
As for making a difference at the company, Moulton White said she is intent on playing her role in “ensuring that the Jamaican populace is fully aware of the wide range of products and services of Sagicor Jamaica via a dynamic, cutting-edge and innovative marketing approach — one that is in line with international best practice and superior” to their marketing competitors.
Her work with Sagicor, she said, has been a dream come true.
“I’ve always wanted to work in marketing. While working in the media, I used to seek out opportunities to work on company events and marketing. I loved working on television, but I still wanted to do more with my creativity. After leaving CVM Television, I learnt of an opening at Sagicor and I applied and was successful,” said Moulton White, who holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from the University of the West Indies, Mona, and a master’s degree in international communications and development from City University in London, England.
She had previously taken advantage of every opportunity she got to hone her marketing skills.
“I left CVM briefly to pursue my master’s degree and while living in London, I had my first real stint in marketing as the public relations/project manager for business development assistant for Absolutely Starving [in] London, England where I implemented and managed projects aimed at increasing sales of [the] up-market, high-quality delicatessen,” Moulton White recounted.
“On returning to Jamaica I went back to CVM Television as producer and was producer of special television features, documentaries, commercials, television series and live broadcasts. I was also the daily host and co-producer of morning magazine programme CVM at Sunrise,” she added.
But even then, she was intent on marketing.
“While at CVM, I tried to do as much marketing and events work as possible, so I did quite a bit of other jobs in the field. I worked with Stingray Sunglasses and Accessories in marketing, sales and distribution. I also worked part-time with the Jamaica Observer’s Food Awards and the Business Leader Awards. I worked at my church as well — Church on the Rock — co-ordinating special projects and events,” she disclosed.
The Meadowbrook High School past student, who spent her formative years in Grange Hill, Westmoreland, as well as in Canada, is now advising others to go after their career dreams.
“The reward for good work is more work. Don’t frown on more responsibility; see it as someone else seeing your potential and what you are capable of. Never say ‘that’s not my job’,” she said.
At the same time, she urged youths to find people who are doing what they dream of doing and “understudy them and how they execute their craft”.
