It’s Bolt and Shelly!
REPEAT Olympic gold medallists Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce validated their status as favourites when they copped the 2012 RJR Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards, respectively, at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel last night.
Bolt became the first man in history to successfully defend his 100m and 200m crowns, and he capped the London summer Olympics by helping the Jamaica 4X100m relay team to a world record run, for a perfect three-gold performance.
Training partner Yohan Blake was voted runner-up to the Sportsman of the Year, ahead of the other contenders — cricketers Marlon Samuels and Christopher Gayle, World Boxing Association Featherweight champion Nicholas Walters, and fellow athletes Hansle Parchment, Warren Weir and Nickel Ashmeade.
Fraser-Pryce also retained her 100m crown and added a silver medal in the 200 metres before helping the women’s quartet capture silver in a new national record in the 4X100 metres relays for a threemedal haul.
Olympic 200m breaststroke finalist Alia Atkinson, who also won the People’s Choice Award, was voted runner-up ahead of the field of contenders which included 100m bronze medallist and many-time winner Veronica Campbell Brown; 400m Diamond League champion Kaliese Spencer; ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year Stafanie Taylor; and boxer Alicia Ashley, who recently won the WBC Junior Featherweight title.
