St James snatch basketball semis berth
MONTEGO BAY, St James — St James High snatched the fourth and final place in the semi-final of the ISSA/KFC Western Conference Under-16 High School Boys’ basketball competition yesterday after beating Green Pond High, 64-15, in a rescheduled game at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
Both schools went into the game with a chance of advancing, but only a win would be enough. Led by Tyrell Foster’s 30 points, St James won to move to 13 points to complete the semi-finals line-up and will now meet the unbeaten Muschett High next Tuesday at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
In the other semi-final, defending champion Herbert Morrison Technical will meet Spot Valley High on Thursday.
In an Under-19 game also played yesterday, Green Pond beat St James High, 52-31, in a game of academic interest only.
Meanwhile, in the Under-16 winner-take-all game, St James dominated from the start, leading 14-6, 28-11 and 45-15 at the intervals as Reynaldo Irving also contributed 19 points for the winners. Moy Coke scored seven points for Green Pond.
The Under-19 semi-finals match-ups will be decided this afternoon when defending champions Cornwall College hosts Holland High in a rescheduled game at Cornwall, starting at 3:30.
Both schools are on 14 points and have already qualified for the semi-finals, but today’s winner will get third place and will face William Knibb Memorial in one semi-final, with the loser meeting unbeaten Muschett in the other semi-final.
