Inter-col entities invited to football scholarship events
THIS Saturday and Sunday, Jamaica will open its doors to US college coaches to view prospective football talents, with the aim of granting scholarships to some of these youngsters to attend universities in the US.
The coaches will have two such events to select from, with the Jonathan Hibbert Foundation event scheduled for Saturday at Munro College, and the Bradley Stewart-Manchester High/Jackie Walters-Glenmuir showcase at Juici Patties in Toll Gate Clarendon the following day.
Both events are set to begin at 8:00 am with registration of players, and their duration will be determined by the coaches.
According to Stewart, a significant number of coaches will be coming down to look at the players, with Munro having confirmed at least 25 coaches and the Glenmuir/Manchester event eight.
He said the two organisers are working together to ensure the visiting coaches get to see the best talents and that players get more than one opportunity to impress.
“There is a collaboration between the Jonathan Hibbert Foundation and the Stewart/Walters showcase in which both set of coaches will be have a chance to view both showcases,” Stewart told the Jamaica Observer.
“This is a great opportunity for players to have two bites at the cherry… so if they can’t go to Munro on Saturday… then the opportunity will be available again on Sunday at Clarendon Park.
“It’s a great opportunity for expectant school leavers, to try and expose themselves to college coaches with a view of getting a scholarship,” he added.
The former national coach said they have also invited local tertiary institutions to the trials as he believes some players can excel in local institutions if given the opportunity.
“We have invited all of our local tertiary institutions: GC Foster, UWI, UTech, Mico to come and look what is happening… because we hope that if our kids that don’t get a scholarship to go abroad, they will get the same opportunity in our country,” he said.
Registration fee for both events is $100 and assistance will be provided for lunch and refreshment.
