Jamaica 2011
1. The boxing series Contender debuts in January and is an immediate hit. The show single-handedly revitalised the sport of boxing in Jamaica.
2. Veteran politician Donald Buchanan and popular television broadcaster Basil ‘Bagga’ Brown lose their battle with cancer in January.
3. Jamaican musher Damion Robb wins the six-mile and four-mile sprint races at the Marmora SnoFest in February.
4. On August 28, Yohan Blake wins the IAAF World Championships 100-metre gold medal in Daegu South Korea after Usain Bolt was disqualified in the finals due to a false start. Blake became the youngest winner in history at 21.
5. On September 3, Usain Bolt easily wins the 200-metre race with a time of 19.40 seconds. He also helped th 4×100 metre relay team of Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Yohan Blake, and Dexter Lee to a gold medal.
6. Veronica Campbell Brown claims her first gold medal in the 200 metres at the World Championships. It is her third attempt.
7. Danielle Crosskill, daughter of veteran sportscaster Simon Crosskill is crowned as Miss Jamaica World on September 11.
8. Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer is jailed, on October 3, and was subsequently charged with the murder of 27-year-old Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton, a promoter of a Gregory Park address; conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of firearm and possession of ganja. Approximately three weeks later, Palmer was once again charged with a second murder.
9. Portia Simpson Miller is elected for the second time as Prime Minister of Jamaica on December 29.
10. At the end of 2011, there are 1,125 murders recorded, which is a reduction from the 2010 figure of 1428.
