‘Tuffy’ hits brace as Waterhouse outscore Arnett
WATERHOUSE climbed into second spot in the Red Stripe Premier League standings after a brace from prolific striker Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson carried them to a 4-2 win over Arnett Gardens on Monday night at the Tony Spaulding Complex.
Anderson scored in the 19th minute and in time added to seal the win for the Donovan Duckie-coached side, who remain unbeaten in seven starts this round and nine games overall to move to 30 points, two ahead of Portmore, Montego Bay United and Arnett Gardens in the table.
Waterhouse’s coach Duckie said he expected an attacking game from the home team and decided to “fight fire with fire”.
“Irrespective of where we play, we want to impose our style… We started the game purposeful and did not back up… and in the second half we were more clinical,” he said.
Both teams started brightly, with the best chance falling to Arnett’s Kemal Malcolm after 15 minutes, but he made a mess of the chances after he was sent clear on goal.
The visitors took the lead four minutes later when Anderson was given room to cut inside and he beat Damion Hyatt with a low drive inside the near post from 25 yards.
But the hosts were not to be denied and came storming back, grabbing the equaliser in the 30th minute when Jahmeel Thompson turned Leon Strickland’s effort into his own goal.
Waterhouse came out after the break and pushed the home team on the defensive, and it was no surprise when Gary McIntosh volleyed home from the edge of the box in the 55th to give them a 2-1 lead.
Six minutes later they silenced the home fans again when a Waterhouse player was fouled inside the box and referee Kevin Morrison had no choice but to award a penalty.
Although Hyatt saved captain Andre Clennon’s penalty, the striker reacted quickly and fired home the rebound.
Arnett, who have gone behind in most of their matches this season, attempted one of their dramatic comebacks, but despite putting goalkeeper Richard McCallum to the test, they were not able to reduce the deficit until seven minutes from the end when Jason Moore was cut down inside the box and Kirk Ramsey dispatched the resulting penalty.
Any hopes the home team had of coming back were dashed three minutes into added time, however, when Anderson latched onto a pass over the top of the defence and drilled a low shot under Hyatt to seal the three points.
Arnett coach Calvin Lewis said defensively, they were very poor: “You cannot play the Premier League and defend in this manner; to concede four goals at home is hard,” he said.
