H’View extend Boys’ Town’s wretched form
HARBOUR View, who ended with nine men, extended the wretched winless streak of first end-of-round champions Boys’ Town with a stunning 3-0 peppering in Thursday’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match at the rain-drenched Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Harbour View scored through Nicholas Beckett’s effort in the fifth minute, a remarkable Evan Taylor strike in the 81st, and Eric Vernan’s composed finish three minutes before the end.
The victory pushed overall RSPL leaders Harbour View to 34 points, six ahead of last season’s champions Portmore United and the resurgent Arnett Gardens.
In the Round Two standing, the Vin Blaine-conditioned unit also moved to nine points, but they remain middle of a tightly bunched pack.
Boys’ Town, guided by head coach Andrew Price, have 23 points and stay eighth overall, but are second from bottom in this round with one point after suffering their fifth defeat in six matches. Only hapless Savannah SC have a worse Round Two record.
Boys’ Town, who sometimes use the Anthony Spaulding facility as their home venue, went behind early when Beckett scrambled the ball past goalkeeper Kirk Porter from inside the six-yard box.
Five minutes later, striker Damian Harwood could have made it 2-0, but saw his shot hit the upright from close range.
Moments later, Boys’ Town’s Marvin Stewart was thwarted by goalkeeper Michaud Barrett from point-blank range, as the visitors valiantly held onto the lead.
Harbour View’s task was made harder, however, when Jaron Richards, who had just committed a reckless challenge on Boys’ Town’s Marvin Morgan, was red-carded for verbally abusing the referee moments before the half-time interval.
Just after the start of second half, Harbour View missed another invitation to extend the lead when Roland Dean failed to find the net from Beckett’s cushioned header.
With the game still open, Boys’ Town continued to press for the equaliser but were denied on the hour mark, when Nicholas McMorris’s expert header was superbly saved by Barrett.
Boys’ Town saw their chances boosted further when Dean was ejected after picking up his second booking in the 76th minute, but their hopes were soon shattered by Taylor’s magic.
Nine minutes before the end, the midfielder picked up a loose ball in his own half, took a look at Porter, who was off his goal line and rifled an outrageous shot into the net to put the nine men of Harbour two up.
With the game already out of reach, substitute Jermie Lynch led a counter-attack and dribbled by the retreating McMorris before passing for Vernan to score and leave home fans bewildered and angry.
