Glenmuir pip Clarendon College for Abner Wright Cup
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Glenmuir High added the Abner Wright Under-16 trophy to their daCosta Cup after edging Clarendon College 1-0 in the final at Foga Road High last Friday.
Ricardo Dennis, who stepped down from the winning daCosta Cup team, grabbed the winner in the final minute of time added after benefiting from some indecisive defending from Clarendon College.
The Chapleton-based Clarendon College were the dominant team throughout, but failed to put away their chances.
Glenmuir will now play either Cornwall College or Manchester High, who were scheduled to meet in the Galloway Cup final at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), in the allrural final today.
“The guys are still celebrating the daCosta Cup victory and they are the defending champions, so I guess they had a point to prove,” Glenmuir coach Denavon Hayles said.
“We were really organised in defence,” he added. “Yes, we had to soak up a lot of pressure, but we know that we are quick on the break, which got us the goal today.”
Meanwhile, Seaforth High blanked Vere Technical 2-0 to claim the Under-14 title in the first game of the double-header.
They will also meet the winner of the Cornwall/STETHS final for the all-rural trophy.
