1. January 7 marked the 100-year anniversary of the devastating Port Royal earthquake that destroyed most of the city and parts of Kingston.
2. In commemorating the 200 years since the abolition of slavery, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable John Sentamu, the first black man to become Anglican Archbishop for York, Primate of England, visited the island to speak at the 137th Synod.
3. Jamaica hosts the opening ceremony for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup, held throughout the Caribbean.
4. The Bruce Golding-led Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) broke the Peoples’ National Party (PNP) 18-year position as Jamaica’s ruling political party, winning 31 of the 60 constituencies.
5. The Anglican church hymnals in Jamaica were given a shake up when Bob Marley’s One Love and Peter Tosh’s Psalm 27 were added.
6. The Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force formed the Polygraph Unit to further assist the fight against corruption.
7. Jamaica said ‘goodbye’ to one of its track and field pioneers as Herb McKenley, O.M died on November 26.
8. Jamaica’s political history was thrown into chaos as the Bruce Golding-led JLP uncovered what was eventually dubbed the ‘Cuban Light Bulb Scandal’, highlighting an estimate $300 million misappropriation of funds.
9. Ziggy Marley won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album with Love is My Religion.
10. Clearly an indicator of what was to come from the speedster, Yohan Blake captured four gold medals in his first year as a Class One athlete at the Boys and Girls Championship.
