Powell confident of a Windies win
DHAKA, Bangladesh — Rookie opener Kieran Powell says West Indies will be hunting victory on today’s final day of the opening Test against Bangladesh.
The tourists ended day four at the Shere Bangla Stadium on 244 for six, a lead of only 215 runs with four wickets intact after being led on first innings by 29 runs.
“I still think we are in a good position to try and get a win from here,” said Powell, who hit 110 yesterday to follow up his first innings 117.
“Once we reach 300 (on today’s final day), we should be in a good position to look for the victory, or even try to save the game.
“If we can bat through the first session (today) we should be in a safe enough position to push for a win from there.”
West Indies piled up 527 for four declared in their first innings but Bangladesh turned in a superb effort to reply with 556.
The Caribbean side cruised to a commanding position of 209 for one yesterday before suffering a collapse late in the day, losing five wickets for 35 runs in the final hour.
Powell wrote his name in the record books with his second hundred of the match, becoming the ninth West Indian and the first in 11 years to achieve the feat.
“The previous night, our massage therapist told me this was the perfect opportunity to do something like this,” he said.
“I know this is a rare feat and I am fortunate it has happened for me.”
The 23-year-old, in only his 12th Test, added 189 for the second wicket with Darren Bravo who scored 76, before the rot set in.
He said batting conditions had become more difficult as the match progressed and this could work in the Windies’ favour on the final day.
“The ball has started to stop a bit and this extra grip on the surface allowed it to bounce a little bit more and it was a bit difficult for strokeplay,” he said.
