Doc Holiday clinical in Grannum Mem Cup
ELITE Bloodstock bay colt Doc Holiday came storming forward leaving the 800 metres mark and hit the front unmolested to win the $715,000 Abbie Grannum Memorial Cup feature for native-bred two-year-olds by three lengths at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.
Ridden by jockey in waiting Dane Nelson, Doc Holiday, going off as a 5-2 chance, ran 1,400m in a time of 1:283 to open his winning account.
The victory also provided trainer Richard Azan and his Elite Bloodstock Limited consortium with their second trophy feature on consecutive days following his successful saddling of Mark My Word to his third successive win in the 34th running of the CTL Superstakes on Saturday.
Awesome Code, the 1-2 favourite ridden by Andre Martin, was second, with Flagrans, ridden by Trevor Simpson, finishing third three-parts of a length back.
The Best Flyer, well supported at 5-1, completed the frame under claiming apprentice Ruja Lahoe in the field of 11.
Doc Holiday took some time to get going, but once Nelson hit the 800m pole, the two-year-old, running for only the second time, was transformed and came away from the field without much opposition.
Said Nelson: “I was never bothered by being outpaced in the early stages of the race. I bided my time and on reaching the half-mile I sent him storming forward. He then came away from the field for what as an easy victory.”
A bay colt by Wizard Of Gold out of Si Mi Trial (Crucial Trial) and bred by Edison Chai, Doc Holiday earned his first winning purse of $390,400 from two career starts for collective earnings of $409,900 lifetime.
Meanwhile, Prince “Daggerman” Holder continued to produce the big outsiders by booting home the 30-1 shot, No Smoking, for trainer Tensang Chung. Holder had earlier booted home No Smoking as 17-1 bet on October 3.
