TRURO, Westmoreland — Leaders of promoted Red Stripe Premier League outfit Savannah Sports Club say they will not be sitting down idle as the club’s first season in the country’s top football competition threatens to unravel.

Having topped the league at the close of the first three weeks, Savannah has suffered a spectacular fall, earning just two points in their next eight games, dropping like a stone to 11th position on 11 points.

The club which rapidly climbed the ladder from the Westmoreland Football Association’s Division Two to the Premier League in just four seasons, winning at every stop, knows they must go find better players if they are to survive for more than just one season.

Following their most recent loss, 4-0, the largest margin of defeat this season, at the feet of fellow western club Montego Bay United at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Sunday, assistant coach, Audley Thomas, threatened that heads would roll.

Two days later the sore was just as raw as head coach Patrick Graham told Observer West the process to identify new players had started already. However, he said that those now representing the club would have to continue another eight games until the January transfer window opened.

“Yes we are looking at players,” the former national midfielder said of his team that has scored just four goals while conceding 16 over the last eight games.

“We are looking at players for almost every position,” he said, adding that the club also had “internal issues”.

Graham said “attitudes have changed in the players” saying the commitment was not what it used to be at the start of the season and the upcoming two-week break would be used to to try and deal with that.

Graham said that in terms of new recruits, the focus would be on finding players who can help the club survive their first season at the top. “We are looking at players from the high schools and the club level but we (also) want players who can bring in experience as we lack leadership,” he said.

Even more important, Graham said, goal scorers were needed as only last placed Highgate United with four goals have scored fewer than they have.

While not going into any details, Graham hinted they were already talking to “experienced players” whom they hoped to be able to land.

Savannah beat Wadadah in the Western Confederation finals last year before placing second to Cavaliers of KSAFA in the Confederation play-offs. They set the RSPL alight when they won their first three games, beating Portmore, Harbour View and Cavalier.

A home loss to Tivoli Gardens snapped their winning run and since then they have managed just a point away to Waterhouse and Arnett Gardens.
