Romney concedes, wishes Obama success
Defeated Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney delivered a short concession speech lasting fewer than six minutes a few minutes ago, in which he acknowledged that Americans had chosen a different leader and called on the President Barack Obama and citizens to reach across the aisle.
“I pray that the president will be successful in guiding our nation,” he said. “I want to thank Paul Ryan for all that he has done for our campaign. And for our country. Besides my wife Ann, Paul is the best choice I’ve ever made.”
In a further reference to his wife — who was visibly unhappy when she got on stage — Romney said: “She would have been a wonderful first lady.”
Earlier in the day, Romney had told reporters he had only crafted an acceptance speech. He and his staff seemed surprised at the loss, although state polls had indicated for at least two weeks that it was likely.
“I so wish that I had been able to fulfil your hopes to lead the country in a different direction,” he said.
