The 2012 London Olympics female 400 metres hurdler fourth-placed finisher, Diamond League champion and Eve ambassador, Kaliese Spencer, was honoured by that company at its Facey Commodity headquarters off Marcus Garvey Drive yesterday after she returned to the island for the first time since the London Games ended in July.

Despite failing to medal in London, 25-year-old Spencer ended the season on a high after winning the Diamond League 400 metres hurdles title for the third year running and finishing the season as the number one 400 metres female hurdler.

Patrick Scott, Facey’s executive deputy chairman, was overwhelmed at meeting Spencer in person for the first time and labelled her “Jamaica’s diamond athlete”.

“This is our diamond girl… the diamond athlete of Jamaica,” he told the gathering at the press conference.

“She has done a remarkable job since she came on board with us just over a year ago… we can only be proud of her achievements,” Scott declared.

The 2007 World Junior 400 metres hurdles champion admitted that she has a great relationship with the commodities firm and conceded that the food giant has helped her to realise some of her dreams and goals.

“I have this great relationship with them… and we communicate a lot, but since I’ve been ambassador for this brand a lot more people have come to know me,” she added.

Spencer said taking the Diamond League trophy for the third successive season for the 400m hurdles made up for not medalling at the Olympics.

“I didn’t get a (Olympic) medal, I came fourth but I ended the season as the third-time Diamond League champion, so I can’t complain,” she told reporters.

Spencer said finishing outside the medals was just one of those days in the life of an athlete.

“Although I was running with the same people, it was just a bad day and a bad race,” she reasoned. “I trained hard and ran my best every single race, but it wasn’t meant to be. I will never give up; I will just go back to the drawing and come again,” she stated.

The former Mannings High star added that being the Diamond League champion was still a title for her, although she has her eyes firmly fixed on next year’s World Championship.

“I am the type of person who never gives up until I get my goal and I am going for gold next year, so hopefully, God’s willing I’ll get it,” Spencer noted.
