EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ROUND-UP – October 2
Suarez strikes three
EPL: Luis Suarez scored a terrific trio of goals to give Liverpool their first win of the season in a 5-2 thrashing of Norwich. Chelsea and Arsenal’s London derby was equally entertaining as both clubs battled bravely before Juan Mata scored from a free kick to give the Blues the 2-1 win.
Manchester City defeated Fulham 2-1 with a late Edin Dzeko strike, while Tottenham earned their first Old Trafford win since 1989 against City’s Manchester rivals in a nervy 3-2 result.
Nikica Jelavic continued Everton’s strong start to the season with a brace in his side’s 3-1 win over Southampton. Peter Crouch also netted two in Stoke’s 2-0 triumph over Swansea.
Meanwhile, Steven Fletcher remains on fire as he scored his fifth premier league goal of the season in Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Wigan. There were draws in the weekend’s two other matches as Demba Ba struck late to salvage a point in Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Reading while Aston Villa versus West Brom ended 1-1.
Ronaldo revives Real Madrid
La Liga: Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice from the penalty spot along with a close-range header to inspire his Real Madrid to their first dominant performance of the season as Los Blancos mauled Deportivo 5-1.
Barcelona, meanwhile had to come from behind again as David Villa’s 93rd minute goal gave them the 3-2 win over Sevilla. This was all part of a goal-frenzied weekend as Malaga and Osasuna both raced to 4-0 victories over Betis and Levante respectively.
Valladolid scored 6 to Vallecano’s 1 as both Oscar and Manucho scored braces for the winners. Valencia beat Zaragoza 2-0 while Real Sociedad overcame Bilbao by a similar scoreline.
Atletico Madrid blanked Espanyol 1-0 while Granada beat Celta 2-1.
Juve, Napoli remain unbeaten
Serie A: Juventus scored three goals within the first 20 minutes in their 4-1 win over Roma, while Napoli clipped Sampdoria 1-0 as both teams continued their unbeaten run to the season.
Inter Milan earned their first home win of the season with a 2-1 win against Fiorentina while their rivals AC Milan drew 1-1 with Parma. Fabrizio Miccoli scored a hat-trick to help Palermo rout Chievo 4-1 even as Alberto Gilardino scored twice for Bologna in an equally commanding 4-0 win over Catania.
Rolando Bianchi also netted a brace as Torino beat Atalanta 5-1. Pescara and Lazio both eked out 2-1 wins over Cagliari and Siena respectively while Udinese versus Genoa ended goalless.
Borussia bounce back
Bundesliga: Dortmund bounced back from losing their 32-game streak last week with a 5-0 thrashing of derby rivals Borussia Monchengladbach after Marco Reus scored a brilliant brace.
Bayern were seamless again as they blanked Werder Bremen 2-0. Stuttgart and Mainz gained similar score lines against Nuremburg and Wolfsburg respectively. Leverkusen also won 2-0 against Greuther Furth.
Eintracht Frankfurt continued their good league start as they beat Freiburg 2-1. Dani Schahin’s brace for Dusseldorf could earn no more than a point as they drew 2-2 with Schalke. Hoffenheim and Augsburg battled to a rather flat 0-0 draw with the only talking point being Sejad Salihovic’s red card.
