Camperdown take aim at leaders Jamaica College
Camperdown will be seeking to avenge their first-round defeat and overtake Jamaica College as group leaders when they travel to Old Hope Road for the Zone B top-of-the-table clash in the ISSA Digicel/Gatorade Manning Cup match this afternoon.
In the group’s other game, Waterford will entertain Mona at Waterford’s playingfield.
Jamaica College lead the group with 12 points and their place at the summit is only threatened by the East Kingston school who trail by two points.
The Alfred Henry-coached Jamaica College won the first game away by a single goal and will start favourites in this encounter after taking maximum points from the first round games.
However, the Christopher Bender-coached team have kept pace with their rivals despite that lost, but will have to win today if they intend to qualify for the Walker Cup, as only the top team from each group and the best second-place will advance to the knockout competition.
Meanwhile, Waterford will hope to stay in the race with victory over the pointless Mona at home. The St Catherine school lost to Camperdown on Friday and fell four points behind that opponent in third.
But if Camperdown fail to get full points and they win, they will believe they still have a chance, with three games to go.
In the lone game in Zone D, Bridgeport (13 points) will look to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points over Calabar, when they take on bottom-of-the-table Haile Selassie at Tinson Pen.
Bridgeport trounced the said opponent 6-0 in their first round meeting and will be confident of three points despite playing away.
In Zone E, Ascot and Holy Trinity can overtake Spanish Town at the top of the standings providing they win today. Ascot entertain Jonathan Grant, while Holy Trinity take on St Catherine at home.
Spanish Town lead the standings with 12 points, two ahead of Ascot and Holy Trinity.
But St Catherine, who sit fourth on eight points, can get back into the race for a second round berth with a win this afternoon.
All games are scheduled to start at 3:30 pm.
