Fidge Fletcher, stylist and fashion designer of Jamaican parentage, caught up with SO over cocktails at the Top of the World at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel at the launch of the Fashion With a Purpose celebrity auction. The effervescent Fletcher — who interned with the likes of renowned designer Roberto Cavalli and worked on major advertisement campaigns in the United States for brands such as Movado, Rolex, Estée Lauder and Avon —- was clad in a black pleated vintage Chanel dress with the latest BCBG Max Azria wedges straight off the runway.

In between sips of cocktail Fletcher shares her ‘click story’.

What are you sipping today?

Absolut vodka on the rocks.

What kind of day are you having?

Fantastic! I just drove in from Portie. Being here at this launch is a fabulous way to start my evening.

Socialite or homebody?

Well I have to be a socialite because of my job. But I guess I am also a homebody in some way.

Flats or stilettos?

I never ever wear flats. I love chunky heels, wedges and boots. I love them so much I may own over 50 pairs of boots.

Jeans or LBD?

I guess I would have to say LBD, because I probably own three pairs of jeans. I am not a fan of jeans.

In a sentence, how would you describe yourself.

Fidge Fletcher is eclectic.

Share a bit of your journey with us?

I started working in the fashion industry when I was 19 years old when I interned with Maxine Walters (Jamaican film producer). She believed in my talent and she brought me on set to observe and assist in the styling for the movie License to Wed. I then moved on to do my master’s at Domus Academy in Italy, where I Interned with Roberto Cavalli. Milan is beautiful but expensive so after my internship I moved to New York and I have lived there since. I started assisting stylists for fashion week in 2009. This opened many doors for me as it allowed me to later intern for Tomasso Concina and assisted him on major accounts such as Rolex. Perhaps one of my most influential mentors was Laura Ferrara. Though she was militant in her approach, everything I learned from her helped me with my career today. I was her assistant for in 2010 and we worked on Avon, Movado and Estée Lauder. I later started working on my own collection and worked in Jamaica styling local celebrities such as Brick and Lace and Beenie Man. Last year my major project was styling Jacque Reid for a series on NCB called New York Live.

What’s your favourite campaign that you have worked on thus far?

Estée Lauder and Clinique have been my favourite campaigns to date.

Who are your favourite designers?

Roberto Cavalli, Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

My mum Lorna Green told me that humility goes a long way. You must always respect others, love yourself and love what you do. If you do this you will reap life’s rewards.

What is your proudest achievement to date?

I am proud that I was able to not only survive moving to New York City but doing exactly what I said I was going to accomplish by living there. Before the year ends I hope to be working on another major television show or movie and styling a six-page editorial.

When you are not working, where is the best place to find you?

In New York City at Bergdorf Goodman doing work from my laptop.

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired by people, nature, art and life. I like seeing different person’s perspectives on style.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

My story hasn’t even unfolded as yet. There is so much more I want to accomplish. I hope to have children and a booming career. I also want to have a house in Italy as well as Jamaica.

What’s in your handbag?

My BCBG Max Azria bag contains L’Oreal face powder, Revlon lipgloss, my house keys, my driver’s licence, credit card and some Jamaican money.
