Designer Genes
Fashion runs in Judean Huxtable’s bloodline. Dad is Dexter Huxtable — one of Kingston’s most sought-after menswear designers and the couturier behind the hip Spokes Apparel boutique. Judean’s granddad was a master tailor and grandmum a seamstress. It’s little wonder then that Judean is dipping her toes into the world of fashion with her own line of high-waisted denim shorts, fringed crop tops and studded caps.
Named JULU — Joy, Unity, Love, Understanding — Huxtable tells SO that the line, which was launched last June, targets “young ladies between the ages of 16 and 25 who have a bright and edgy sense of fashion”.
“I have always been a very creative person,” says the young lady who works by day as a graphic designer. “I want to share that creativeness with other people since it’s kind of like art to me.”
The JULU look, colourful prints and studs, has an of-the-moment appeal and is favoured by fashion-loving celebs like Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Rita Orr.
So what’s next? The budding designer shares: “I’m taking it one day at a time and never biting off more than I can chew, but I’d like to add more new products to my catalogue.”
The JULU line will be available at the Cooyah store at 96 Hope Road when the Jamaica Observer Celebrates Fashion’s Night Out this Thursday, September 6, between 5:00 to 10:00 pm.
