Spain sacks Olympic football coach
MADRID, Spain (AP) — Spain’s football federation has decided not to renew the contract of under-21 coach Luis Milla after the team’s disastrous Olympic campaign.
The medal contenders failed to win a match or score a goal and were eliminated from the tournament after the group stage.
Milla coached the team to the 2011 European Championship to qualify for the London Games.
Spain says under-19 coach Julen Lopetegui will lead the team for matches against Switzerland and Croatia, respectively, next month. The contracts of Milla and trainer Juan Carlos Martinez weren’t renewed when they expired today.
Spain’s Olympic squad contained three European Championship winners, including forward Juan Mata, who was among three overage players on the team.
