Women’s 200m: Jamaica’s Campbell-Brown aims for record third gold
LONDON, England — Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell Brown is one of two women at the London 2012 Olympic Games who could win a record third consecutive gold medal in an individual athletics event. The other is pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbateva of Russia. Challengers
Campbell Brown will also look to get back on the podium after winning the 100m bronze medal on Saturday. However, she faces a regular rival and a formidable foe in three-time 200m-world champion and London 2012 100m finalist Allyson FelixI (USA), who finished second behind Campbell-Brown over 200m in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
Apart from her 2004 and 2008 successes, Campbell-Brown also ended Felix’s s winning streak at the world championships when she won in Daegu, Korea, last year. She has run 22.39 seconds this year, but such is the quality of the event — which starts on Monday — that she is only the seventh fastest on the list of entries.
Felix is in superb form, having run a personal best and world leading time of 21.69 at the US Olympic trials, the fastest for 14 years.
Carmelita JETER (USA), the London 2012 silver medallist, finished second at the US Olympic trials and ran a personal best of 22.11 in Eugene. After winning the 2011 world championships silver medal, it is certainly conceivable that she could finish in front of the two leading contenders.
Sanya Richards Ross finished third at the USA Olympic trials and could also be a factor in the race for the medals. However, her main priority is the 400m.
Richards Ross is in solid form having run a personal best of 22.09 this season and a medal would also be special as she has never been on the podium at this distance at a major international championships.
London 2012 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce is in impressive form over the longer sprint distance after running 22.10 to beat reigning champion Campbell-Brown at the Jamaican national championships.
The third member of the outstanding Jamaican trio is Sherone Simpson who has run 22.37 this season, her best time since 2008. The 2006 Commonwealth champion has a personal best of 22.00, from six years ago and, after not finding her best form in 2009 and 2011, she has been on an 18-month upward curve.
Also, Aleksandra Fedoriva, the 2010 European championships bronze medallist, has had only one outing at the distance this year and has focused more on the 400m but ran 22.19 to win at the Russian championships in July and could also be a medal threat.
Campbell-Brown is one of only two women to win back-to-back Olympic titles. Barbel WOCKEL (GDR) previously achieved the double in 1976 and 1980.
