LONDON, England – If he had to make the decision right now Jermaine Gonzales would not run on the Jamaica 4x400m relay team as he thinks he would be taking the place of someone more deserving after failing to get thr0ugh the first round of the Olympics men’s 400m a Olympic Stadium in Stratford, London, this morning.

Gonzales, the National Record holder at 44.40 seconds, ran a disappointing 46.21 seconds for sixth in his heat today and told journalists here that a right hamstring injury that has been bothering him from before the National Trials in June was to be blamed.

“This is not what I wanted,” he said, “It’s a big disappointment. I have been struggling with a right hamstring problem from before national championships and it did not give me a chance to prepare properly; I have been in an out of treatment and just did not get enough time to prepare to run here today.”

Gonzales said up to two days ago he was not sure he wanted to run and when asked about the relays said, “I am supposed to be the key man in the relays but as you saw today I did not run that well, if it was up to me I don’t want to run on that relay team as I am sure the rest of the guys are running faster than me right now.”;
