LONDON, England — Jamaica’s newest swimming star Alia Atkinson will make an attempt to qualify for her second semi-finals in three events at the 27th Olympic Games at the Aquatic Centre when she swims in the preliminary round of the 50m freestyle this morning starting at 10:00 am UK time (4:00 am Jamaican time).

After captivating her home nation, and the imagination of people outside with her exploits on her way to placing fourth in the 100m breaststroke last week, Atkinson will hope to end her third Olympic Games on a high note.

The swimmer, who has a personal best 25.90 seconds for the onelap race, will swim in lane eight in the sixth heat of 10 and will hope to be one of the top 16 swimmers advancing.

To get to the semi-finals she would have to defy the odds once more as almost 30 other swimmers have faster times than her.

Atkinson, who says she hopes to continue competing through to the 2016 Games in Brazil, set three National Records in the 100m and 200m breaststroke earlier.

Two records came in the 100m race where she took her time down to one minute 06.79 seconds and then swam two minutes 28.77 seconds in the first round of the 200m breaststroke for another record.

Atkinson, who was fourth in the 100m breaststroke final on Monday, broke her own record of 2:29.00 set in February last year at the Missouri Grand Prix.

She will end her swimming programme today when she takes part in the 50m freestyle.
