LONDON, England — Jamaica’s sprint queen Veronica Campbell Brown is eagerly looking towards the women’s 100m at the London Olympics as the clock ticks down to the start of the athletics competition later this week.

Campbell Brown, who was second in the 100m and third in the 200m at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Championships, both won by the inform Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, says she is excited about the Olympics, which will be her fourth after making the team to the 2000 Games held in Australia as a schoolgirl at Vere Technical.

“So, London’s calling, the Opening Ceremony was beautiful and brisk. I will compete at 100m and 200m plus the 4×100. This will be my second time doing the 100m at the Olympic Games and I am excited about it all,” she wrote on her IAAF online diary published yesterday.

Campbell Brown, the two-time 200m defending champion, said she was gratified by the response of her fans after she failed to win her final Olympic prep race, in Switzerland two weeks ago, saying: “The responses from my fans following this race provided to me a sweet reminder that there are supporters who will be with you whether you are winning or not.”

The 13-time global medallist and two-time IAAF World Indoors 60m champion has had a less than stellar buildup to the Olympic Games, placing second in the 100m final at the National Trials and third in the 200m. In the latter she was beaten on the line for the silver by a fast-finishing Sherone Simpson, who came from fifth place coming off the curve.

She described the pre-Olympic training camp in Birmingham as excellent: “The food was excellent and the weather quite manageable.”

In her diary she said July was “rather quiet”, as she “focused primarily on finetuning for the Olympic Games. It seems so hard to grasp that London will represent my fourth Olympic Games, let me see, Sydney, Athens, Beijing and now London. Time certainly moves fast in a sport where being faster is one of the Olympic Games motto.”
