IOC provisionally suspends Uzbek athlete
LONDON, England — The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that Uzbek athlete Luiza Galiulina (artistic gymnastics) has been provisionally suspended from the Games.
Galiulina provided a urine sample on 25 July that tested positive for the prohibited substance furosemide.
The IOC disciplinary commission for this case, composed of Thomas Bach (chairman), Frank Fredericks and Göran Petersson, decided that the athlete would be provisionally suspended from further competition, effective immediately.
The commission added that upon receipt of the results of the B Sample analysis, a final decision would be made.
The IOC also performs out-of-competition, unannounced tests. Over the course of the London Games, the IOC is expected to carry out some 5,000 tests — 3,800 urine and 1,200 blood.
