Atkinson swim-off for 3:29 this afternoon
LONDON, England — Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson finished in a dramatic tie for fourth place in her breaststroke semi final with Canada’s Tera Van Beilen, both clocking 1 minute 07.48 seconds for the eighth and final place in the final.
An official from FINA, the sports’ global governing body confirmed with the Jamaica Observer that more likely than not “there would be a swim-off 30 minutes after the final event of the evening” which would be the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay set to start at 9:00pm UK time.
Atkinson, who swam a National Record 1 minute 07.49 seconds in this morning’s first round heat, led her heat for about 60m and turned first in 31.49 seconds, before fading to fourth place.
According to the FINA official swim offs were not unusual.
The swim-off is set for 3:29pm Jamaica time with Atkinson starting in lane five and Canada’s Van Bielen in lane four.
