1.6 million tickets sold for Olympic football tourneys
LONDON, England (AP) — Olympic organisers have sold 1.6 million tickets for the men’s and women’s football tournaments — although half-a-million are still available.
The sales exceed the 1.4 million that were sold at this summer’s European Championship, London organising committee spokeswoman Jackie Brock-Doyle said yesterday.
Football is one of two sports that kick off the London games early, along with archery.
More tickets have been sold for football than any other sport — largely because of the size of the venues — despite some concerns that the tournaments wouldn’t be much of a draw.
Organisers said earlier this week that about 80 per cent of the 37,000 people expected to attend yesterday’s doubleheader between US and France and Colombia versus North Korea in Glasgow had been handed freebies.
