1. In February, the People’s National Party, led by Michael Manley, defeated the governing Jamaica Labour Party led by the Prime Minister Edward Seaga by 45 seats to 15.
2. Sir Philip Sherlock, former UWI Vice-Chancellor, was awarded the Order of Merit.
3. The new radio stations, KLAS, Irie FM, and the now defunct Radio Waves, began broadcasting.
4. Carlton Alexander, outstanding businessman, philanthropist, and managing director of GraceKennedy Limited, died on Labour Day, May 23.
5. The dollar moved from $5.50 to US$1 to $6.50 to US$1.
6. In recognition of its contribution to international affairs, Jamaica was selected at the conclusion of the United Nation’s Non-Aligned meeting in Belgrade in September as one of the groups of 15 developing countries to meet at the summit level — at the level of Heads of State.
7. The famous thriller, The Mighty Quinn, starring Denzel Washington, was filmed at various locations across Jamaica.
8. Jamaican-born cricketer Jeffery Dujon, was named Sportsman of the Year.
9. Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers won a Grammy for their album Conscious Party.
10. World Champion sprinter Yohan Blake was born on December 26.
