Fishy feelings
Ornamental, or exotic fish farming could be a lucrative business in Jamaica. The colourful fish are kept as pets and are in high demand in the US, especially in colder states — they are said to help lift spirits during longer periods indoor during the winter. The global demand is now valued at US$6 billion ($528 billion), according to the foreign affairs and trade ministry. The Jamaican tropical climate is good for improving the aesthetic value of the fish, by intensifying their hues, when compared to those farmed in cooler climates. And the country’s close proximity to the US adds to the possible viability of the business of growing the fish here for export to there.
