Vallee, Hurmal top inaugural Russell super series
JASON Vallee, Samech Herah and Dwayne Hurmal took the honours at the first staging of the two-day Hi-Lyte/Russell Tennis Academy Junior Super Series weekend at Campion/Deep Dene.
The round-robin competition was for 18 & Under and 14 & Under players, with those winning the most games, scored as points, walking away with trophies and medals.
Vallee, an American, scored 35 points in the Boys 18 & Under to edge out Richard Blake of Wolmer’s Boys who finished with 33 points. Donclair Brown of Campion College and Juwan Dobeberry of Wolmer’s placed third and fourth respectively with 27 and 20 points.
In the Boys 14 & Under, Hurmal of Wolmer’s Boys amassed 36 points to take the title ahead of Matthew Rhoden of Campion College, 33 points. Jabari Hasting of Campion College took third place collecting 31 points while his schoolmate Aaron Casserly finished fourth with 24 points.
Campion College’s Samech Herah, recipient of the Russell Tennis Academy Sponsorship, won the Girls 14 & Under when she beat Sarah Sterling of Immaculate Conception, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, for the 18-5 points victory.
Apart from trophies and medals, the winners received gift baskets from Hi-Lyte and runners-up gift baskets from Locker Room Sports.
Tournament director Rayne Russell summed up the tournament.
“I’m pleased with the performance of the players, especially of Jason Vallee. I’ve been working with this kid for just three weeks and I’ve seen a lot of improvement. He lives overseas and was encouraged to enter the tournament.”
Concerning Herah, Russell noted: “She has a lot of talent and we will continue to groom her.”
The junior series tournaments will be held monthly in order to track the growth and improvement of the young players, pointing to what they will need to work on during their training sessions.
