Guyana to expedite Brazilian mining permits
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – GUYANA says it will expedite work permits for hundreds of Brazilian miners and cut out middlemen following complaints of corruption.
Natural Resources Minister Robert Persaud says the government will no longer accept applications from brokers or middlemen who have argued they help overcome the language barrier. He said that officials will only accept documents issued by a new organisation recognised by the Brazilian Embassy that represents an estimated 10,000 Brazilian miners.
Security Minister Clement Rohee says all applications pending before the end of April will be processed in no more than four weeks provided there are no errors.
He said a new task force has been appointed to handle the influx of applications.
