Lyming with LAZA
TEENage travelled to St Thomas to Press Record with one of the freshest voices in the music industry — Laza Morgan.
Calling his sound international, Laza told TEENage of his years watching his father Denroy Morgan (of I’ll Do Anything For You fame), older siblings, who formed the reggae super group Morgan Heritage, before forming LMS with two of his other siblings.
“Touring the world with Morgan Heritage and LMS… shaped my music to what it is today. Going to Africa and hearing their music, growing up in the US, then moving to Jamaica is in my style… international,” he explained at his family home in Prospect.
In Jamaica to promote a new collaboration with Tifa, Love Me 2, Laza said he could not be more impressed with the female DJ.
“I saw her at Sumfest (2011) when I performed with Mavado (international hit One By One) and I said I had to get her on a track. I was impressed with her delivery. I thought her approach had an international feel and we made contact from there,” Laza said.
Having to do the track separately, because of scheduling conflicts, did not affect the quality as he said she ripped the track in true Tifa style.
This year, Laza will also release a new single Gimme Little that he said is already getting good rotation on the radio and mixtape to be released on his father’s birthday — May 15.
While on the island, Laza is also looking to develop and launch another of his passions — skate boarding.
“I went to school for carpentry and I love skate boards. It’s a multibillion-dollar industry in the US and I am looking to bring some of that revenue to Jamaica,” he said.
“We have lots of talent in Jamaica and I am looking to bring it out, here in St Thomas and across the island,” Laza said.
