The Legend Lives On
The Rock’s rum, coffee, Bolt and Marley have made the wee isle of Jamaica that much bigger on the world map. Of the four, none has resonated more in the psyche of the world than the homegrown reggae superstar. And with the eagerly anticipated Kevin McDonald-directed documentary Marley set for international release this Friday, after having its advance premiere at Emancipation Park last Thursday, let’s just say the Marley name is again a sizzling-hot commodity. SO’s “Jamaica Wow: Counting Down to 50” feature continues this week with the Rock’s ultimate wow — Marley!
Thousands poured into Emancipation Park in New Kingston, Thursday last, to view the film, hosted by the Bob Marley Foundation. The riveting, insightful documentary charts Marley’s life from his birthplace in St Ann to his move to Trench Town in Kingston, and checks off important milestones: his introduction to Rastafarianism, the evolution of his music career, the ascension of the Wailers to worldwide fame and sold-out concert halls and stadium, and of course, the women in his life. Out to see the documentary were local musicians, film directors and producers, business titans, Rastafarians, a cabal of international media and, of course, a sea of curious Jamaicans. SO shares moments from the premiere.
