Jamaica 1973
1. On January 16, The Jamaica Bar Association was incorporated as a Company Limited by the guarantee under the Companies Act and was subsequently exempted from having to use ‘limited’ in its name.
2. Joe Frazier lost his undefeated record of 29-0 and his world championship, at the hands of the unbeaten George Foreman on January 22, 1973, in Kingston, Jamaica
3. On May 2, Michael Manley announced that as of September 1973, the government would be “embarking upon a system of free education in Jamaica”.
4. Once used for horse racing and other sporting activities, the park is the largest in Kingston and was officially christened the National Heroes Park in June.
5. On June 5, the Jamaica Mortgage Bank was converted to a statutory corporation under Act of Parliament No. 16 of 1973. The authorized, issued and fully paid-up share capital of the Bank is at present $100 million.
6. On June 27, Sir Florizel Glasspole became only the second jamaican to be appointed as Governor General.
7. Jamaica became a founding nation of the Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM), a union of Caribbean nations dedicated to ensuring the free flow of goods between countries.
8. The Jamaica Bankers Association became a company under the laws of Jamaica, with its membership consisting of the country’s then eight commercial banks.
9 Dr Joyce Lilieth Robinson assumed leadership of the troubled national literacy campaign, ultimately rescuing the project aimed at getting every Jamaican to read and write. Eight years later, the campaign had taught some 200 000 Jamaicans to read and write.
10 A year-long, worldwide oil crisis undermined Jamaica’s economy and puts the nation on the path to lasting trade imbalances and debt.
