Porter breaks high jump record
CHANICE Porter of Manchester High, one of Jamaica’s best junior female jumping prospects signaled she was returning to top form after a long battle with injuries by setting a new Class 1 high jump record 1.86m on today’s penultimate day of the 102nd ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls Champs at the national stadium.
Porter, who won Jamaica’s first global long jump god medal at the IAAF World Youths Championships in France last year, beat Edwin Allen High’s National Junior Record holder Kimberly Williamson-1.84m and Wolmers Girls’ Shanice Hall-1.67m.
The record was the fifth broken at Champs so far with one being equaled.
Porter who was a bronze medalist in the high jump in France however refused to even attempt the National Junior Record 1.88m telling the Observer she was resting her legs for the long jump tomorrow.
A quad injury she suffered two years ago, delayed the start to her competition this season and she said she was “surprised” to have done so well given she only started competing at the Central Champs held a few weeks ago.
She may however make an attempt at the National junior Record she says come June at the National Junior Trials, by which time she hopes to be back to full fitness.
