Samara Spencer wins Class 3 high jump gold
SAMARA Spencer is not sure how many points Hydel high are targeting to win at this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls Champs but she thinks they are on their way to a good total.
Spencer, the CARIFTA Trials long jump champion, did her part earlier today by winning the Class 3 high jump gold medal after a tough battle with Manchester High’s Annastacia Forrester, last year’s bronze medalist.
Both athletes cleared 1.71m but the Hydel student won on the count back with Alpha Academy’s Gabriel Foster third with 1.68m.
Despite this being her third Girls Champs and having won a gold medal in the Class 4 70m hurdles two years ago, Spencer who was sixth in the high jump last year, said she was nervous throughout and this might have cost her a higher clearance.
“My legs felt weak,” the 15 year-old said and admitted it might have been out of nervousness than physical fitness. “Annastacia is a good athlete and I wanted to beat her and so I was nervous about it,” she admitted.
