Desreen Montaque breaks steeplechase record
DESREEN Montaque became the second Edwin Allen High student to break a record at yesterday’s second session of the 102nd ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships when she won the 200m steeplechase in a new time of seven minutes 01.07 seconds, almost 10 seconds faster than Holmwood Technical’s Amoy Bailey did when the event was first run last year.Points after three finals
Bailey had won in seven minutes 10.92 seconds last year and Montaque, who led from the start to the finish, beat teammate Atara Segree — seven minutes 30.33 seconds, with Holmwood Technical’s Shereen Whyte third in seven minutes 39.15 seconds.
Montaque’s record was the second for Edwin Allen High after Tarasue Barnett had earlier in the day smashed the Girls Class 1 discus throw record with a brilliant 50.76m mark.
The one-two finish was the second for Edwin Allen on the day and third overall; another Edwin Allen athlete Danniel Thomas finished second in the discus throw while two Vere Technical jumpers, Sabina Allen and Shardia Lawrence, won the gold and silver medals respectively in the long jump open.
After three finals, Edwin Allen opened up a 10 points 33-23 lead over Vere Technical with defending champions Holmwood Technical and St Jago tied for third on 17 points.
St Elizabeth Technical are in fourth place with six points while Hydel and St Hugh’s High are on four points each.
Today’s third session will see seven finals, four for girls and three for boys.
