Danniel Thomas wins shot put open gold
DANNIEL Thomas made up for losing her Class 1 discus throw title on Wednesday by winning the shot put open gold medal in a new championships record 14.47m on today’s third session of the 102nd ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls Championships at the national stadium.
Thomas, who took the silver medal in the discus throw on Wednesday, erased Kellion Knibb’s record 13.64m set last year’s renewal as second placed Gleneve Grange of Holmwood also beat the old mark with a personal best 13.74m while Knibb took the bronze with 13.52m.
Thomas’ record is the fourth set by a girl since Wednesday as the Class 1 and 2 discus records as well as the 200m steeplechase records also went.
The former Frome Technical student did not beat her personal best of 14.58m and said she made up with the gold after “messing up” last year when she finished third.
She told reporters after her win that moving to Edwin Allen after the programme at Frome folded was the best move rather than follow her teammates to Vere Technical.
“I wanted to do something on my own rather than follow everyone else,” she said.
Thomas, who also had a personal best 50.42m in the discus throw, will now seek her third medal when she takes part in the javelin open on Saturday.
