J’can discus duo ups preparation with Olympics in view
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Jamaica’s top discus prospects Jason Morgan and Traves Smikle continued their preparations yesterday with solid performances at meets in the United States and Jamaica, respectively.
National Record holder and double Central American and Caribbean Championships gold medallist Morgan improved on his opening 62.07m mark last week by winning the event at the Ragin Cajun Classic in Lafayette, Louisiana with a best throw of 63.82m, a new meet and stadium record.
The old stadium record of 63.09m was set in 1986 by former Alabama athlete Vesterim Hafsteinsson.
Morgan, a two-time World Championships representative, whose national record is 64.11m set last year, had a good series with four throws over 60.00m before fouling on his final attempt.
He opened with 60.70m, then moved up to 62.31m before achieving his best throw on his third attempt.
The former Calabar High athlete, who is chasing the 65.0m A qualifying standard for the Olympics later this year, then threw 60.81m and 58.24m before fouling his final throw as he went after the Olympic mark.
Smikle, who upset Morgan at the National Senior Championships last year and has attained the Olympic B qualifying standard after throwing a personal best 63.75m earlier this year, won the event at the 10th UWI Classic yesterday at the Usain Bolt track with 61.17m, beating Shane Dodd of GC Foster who threw 55.64m.
