Jamaica 1970
1. On January 21, Edward Seaga opened the Cross Harbour Highway by officially travelling across it on a tour of the area.
2. On February 23, the Donald Sangster was sworn in as the second prime minister of Jamaica.
3. On April 11, Donald Sangster died from a brain haemorrhage in Montreal, Canada.
4. Hugh Lawson Shearer was sworn in as the third prime minister of Jamaica soon after.
5. On May 24, 1970, the statue of the Right Excellent Alexander Bustamante was unveiled by Lady Bustamante at the southern end of the Victoria Park.
6. Jamaica equalled its 1958 record haul at that year’s British Commonwealth Games with a medal tally of four gold, two silver and a bronze.
7. In September, the House of Representatives decided to increase the number of seats from 45 to 53.
8. On October 17, 27 Jamaicans were honoured in the first list of honours, other than that of National Heroes.
9. On October 26, the Jamaica Unit Trust was established. This gives small and large investors in Jamaica the opportunity to pool their savings together in a common fund.
10. On December 30, Jamaica hosted the third World Netball Tournament at the National Stadium.
