Ja can lower 4x100m record, says Blake
JAMAICA could lower the world record in the Men’s 4x100metres relay for the third time in four years come the Olympic Games later this year in London, says World Championships double gold medallist Yohan Blake.
If all things are in place, Blake says, the 37.04 seconds set by the quartet of Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, himself and Usain Bolt on the final day of the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea last year could be history.
While arguing that he could run on any leg of the relay anywhere he would be effective for the team, Blake is also eyeing a place on the 4x400m team.
In a teleconference on Tuesday to promote the Adidas Grand Prix in New York in June, Blake said if the Jamaica team could run as fast without former world record-holder Asafa Powell, then if he is fit and in the team, it could run even faster.
Powell, who anchored the team when they clocked 37.10 seconds in Beijing in 2008, was injured last year and forced to miss the World Championships.
Asked whether he thought the American men could also break the world record, Blake said he did not know the condition of the American men at this time.
Meanwhile, after opening his season with a 46.4 seconds-clocking in the 400m at the Camperdown Classic in mid-February, Blake reiterated his desire to be part of the 4x400m team.
“Ever since high school, I love to run the 4x400m race and it would be good to be part of the Jamaican team.”
Blake anchored a Racers Lions 4x400m team at the Gibson Relays to victory in 3 minutes 05.95 seconds and anchored the St Jago High team which set the current Gibson Relays record of 3 minutes 08.32 seconds.
