Trio gains World Junior qualifying mark in MoBay
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Three high jumpers achieved qualifying marks for this year’s IAAF World Junior Championships at Saturday’s Milo Western Relays held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex at Catherine Hall.
Wolmer’s Boys’ CARIFTA Games Under-17 gold medallist Christoff Bryan set a personal best of 2.20 metres to break the meet record and achieve the qualifying standard for the meet that will be held in Barcelona, Spain, July 10-15.
Bryan, who was 15 years old when he won the CARIFTA gold in Montego Bay last year, bested the 2.08 mark set by MVP’s Darrell Garwood last year.
St Elizabeth Technical’s Peta Gay Reid, the CARIFTA Games Under-20 champion, and Edwin Allen High’s Kimberley Williamson, the Pan-Am Junior Championships silver medallist, both cleared 1.80m to achieve the World Junior qualifying mark.
Reid, however, won the gold on the countback as both jumpers beat Williamson’s 1.75m set last year.
The jumpers joined throwers Federick Dacres and Ashinia Miller who also achieved qualifying marks earlier.
Dacres, the World Youth Championships discus gold medallist, has qualified in both the discus and shot put events, while Miller set a new national Junior record of 20.15m last month to qualify in the latter.
