Toronto man buried in Grenada after fatal beating
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (AP) — A 39-year-old Canadian man has been buried in Grenada following his death from injuries allegedly inflicted during a beating by five police officers.
Grenada’s prime minister, the police commissioner and hundreds of other Grenadians attended the funeral Monday for Oscar Bartholomew of Toronto. Some relatives cried uncontrollably and held each other in grief.
Bartholomew’s relatives say he was savagely beaten two weeks ago after he hugged a plainclothes female officer and lifted her off the ground in front of a police station, apparently confusing her with an old friend. He was in Grenada visiting relatives.
Five officers have been charged with manslaughter and are due to appear in court later this month.
